Our monthly musical variety show continues! After taking the month of October off to celebrate and then to recover from our North Georgia Folk Festival, we are back with a very special Hoot! This months Hoot will feature:
Matuto (http://matutomusic.com/) “Appalachian Brazilian” band based in NYC, which features fantastically dance-able music! Featuring vocals, accordion, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and various Brazilian percussion instruments: the alfaia (a large, wooden, rope-tuned bass drum), the pandeiro (a Brazilian tambourine), the berimbau (a single-string on a bow struck with a small stick), and the agogô (a pair of small, pitched metal bells.) They are in town for a seminar on Brazilian culture at UGA and agreed to play The Hoot that evening! Not to be missed and please bring dancing shoes!
Kenney-Blackmon String Band (http://www.kenneyblackmon.com/) Beautifully played fiddle tunes, old time ballads and original songs, this band mixes up traditional melodies with their own spirit of rhythm, harmony, improvisation. A fairly new band, they have been making a splash here in Athens and beyond, recently playing WUGA’s “Once In A Blue Moon” They recently released their first CD, The Singing Tree.
Susan Staley will open and host the evening. This promises to be a stellar night of music! And as always, a free show, so please come out and show your appreciation for these musicians who generously share their talents! athensfolk.org or visit our facebook page and RSVP…. Spread the word!
